removal of wisdom teeth

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

If you have wisdom teeth, your Dental Care Center dentist may recommend that they be removed to prevent infection or decay that might affect surrounding teeth.

A set of four molars, referred to as third molars or wisdom teeth, typically erupt behind second molars as a teenager or young adult. It is very common for patients to experience discomfort with wisdom teeth due to inflammation and swelling as they erupt.

Most patients do not have room for wisdom teeth. Because these “extra” teeth are positioned far back in the mouth and are difficult to clean, they are prone to tooth decay.

Oral Surgery at Dental Care Center of Macon

Dr. Shahrokh Bagheri and Dr. Ali Khan provide oral surgery services in our Macon Dental office. The Dental Care Center dental surgery team is able to accommodate removal of wisdom teeth, dental implant placement and other surgical procedures.

During your consultation and prior to the surgical appointment, we will carefully review instructions with you and answer any questions you may have. On the day of your surgery appointment, we usually recommend that you have a friend drive you to our office and plan to stay with you after the procedure until any sedation wears off.

We will generally see you again for a brief post-op visit 7-10 days after your surgery to check healing and tissue response. We encourage you to Contact Us any time you have questions or concerns about your healing progress. Our after-hours calls are handled by our own Dental Care Center staff dentists, this helps us coordinate your follow up care.

Dental Exam & Consultation

As part of your initial consultation, your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth using necessary digital x-rays and oral examination. If you have wisdom teeth, we will provide you with recommendations based on the ability to maintain these teeth and protect the health of your other teeth.

If your dentist advises removal of wisdom teeth, we will coordinate an in-office consultation with one of our surgical staff dentists.

3D Imaging for Oral Surgery Procedures

Our practice is equipped with 3D Cone Beam Radiography; your Dental Care Center surgeon may request a close-up 3D view of your third molars to verify the location and rotation of the tooth roots. Wisdom tooth roots tend to be very curved or angled, having this information in advance can be very helpful to the surgeon.
